How to Double Cleanse Like a Korean — And the 3 Best Duos to Try

Double cleansing is the single most important step in Korean skincare. Not the serums, not the masks, not the fancy devices — the cleanse. If your skin isn't properly clean, nothing else penetrates properly.

The concept is simple: an oil-based cleanser first (dissolves makeup, SPF, and sebum), followed by a water-based cleanser second (removes remaining impurities). Two steps, two types of dirt, perfectly clean skin without stripping.

I filmed a step-by-step double cleansing walkthrough — watch it here or scroll down for the video.

Here are the three best duos I've tested, each for a different skin concern.

Best for Pore Control: medicube Zero Pore Double Cleansing Duo
The oil uses 11 plant-based oils to dissolve impurities. The Blue Capsule Cleanser has AHA, BHA, PHA for chemical exfoliation plus cica exosomes that calm while they cleanse. This is the most active, results-driven double cleanse on the list — it's actually treating your skin, not just cleaning it.
Why it made the list

If your main concerns are blackheads, enlarged pores, or oily skin, this is the duo. The triple acid in the foam cleanser provides gentle daily exfoliation that prevents buildup. Clinical data: 99.78% impurity removal, 23.4% blackhead improvement.

The mochi-textured oil is thicker and bouncier — it stays on your face instead of dripping. The Rice Mochi Cleanser creates a dense, cushiony lather that feels like washing with a cloud. Zero stripping, zero irritation, zero fragrance. Designed for skin that reacts to everything.
Why it made the list

If you've had bad reactions to other cleansers, start here. The rice extract provides subtle brightening over time, and the unique mochi texture gives better pore contact than thin oils. This duo proved that effective cleansing doesn't have to be harsh.

Best for Daily Makeup Removal: Anua Heartleaf Oil + Foam

Best for Daily Makeup Removal: Anua Heartleaf Oil + Foam
Anua's Heartleaf Cleansing Oil (82.35% heartleaf extract) melts full-face makeup including waterproof mascara in under 60 seconds. Follow with the Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Foam — same calming heartleaf base, low pH, zero tightness. The most soothing daily cleanse for makeup wearers.
Why it made the list

Heartleaf (houttuynia cordata) is one of the most researched anti-inflammatory botanicals in Korean skincare. Having it in both your oil AND foam cleanser means your skin is being calmed and protected at every step. If your skin gets red or irritated from cleansing, this pair eliminates that entirely.

How to Double Cleanse Properly

  1. Start with DRY hands on a DRY face. Oil and water don't mix — applying oil cleanser to wet skin reduces its effectiveness.
  2. Massage the oil cleanser for 60 seconds. Don't rush. This is where blackheads and deep-seated sebum dissolve.
  3. Add water to emulsify. The oil turns milky — this is the sign it's breaking down properly. Rinse completely.
  4. Apply foam cleanser to WET skin. Build lather in your hands first for a thicker, more cushiony foam.
  5. Rinse with lukewarm water. Hot water strips moisture. Cold water doesn't rinse as effectively. Lukewarm is the sweet spot.
  6. Apply toner within 30 seconds. Don't let your skin fully air-dry — it loses moisture rapidly after cleansing.

Which Duo Should You Pick?

Oily/acne-prone skin → medicube Zero Pore Duo (active exfoliation)
Sensitive/reactive skin → Arencia Pore Melt Duo (zero irritation)
Daily makeup wearer → Anua Heartleaf Oil + Foam (best dissolution + calming)
